Privacy Policy
SubLex is a Chrome extension and companion website for language learning on YouTube. The extension displays original YouTube captions and a translation, shows word lookup tooltips, and lets signed-in users save words to cloud dictionaries and practice them with cards.
Information We Handle
SubLex handles only the data needed to provide these features:
- YouTube caption text, selected words, and short surrounding context used for translation and word lookup.
- Video information saved with a word when you choose to save it, such as YouTube video ID, URL, title, and the save time.
- Extension settings stored locally in the browser, including enabled state, interface language, translation language, font size, and subtitle background opacity.
- Account information for signed-in users, including email address, Supabase user ID, and authentication session tokens.
- Saved dictionary data, including words, normalized words, source and target languages, translations, context sentences, part of speech, grammatical notes, meanings, synonyms, dictionaries, and card review state.
- Website analytics and performance metrics collected by Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights for aggregated product and reliability measurement.
SubLex does not collect payment data, medical data, precise location, or personal communications.
How We Use Information
- To display translated subtitles and word lookup tooltips on YouTube.
- To save, sync, show, delete, and practice words in your personal dictionaries.
- To keep your extension and website preferences in sync.
- To authenticate your account and keep you signed in.
- To maintain security, troubleshoot problems, and improve reliability.
Sharing and Third-Party Services
SubLex uses the following services only as needed for core product features:
- Google Translate API and Yandex Translate API receive subtitle text, words, and short context phrases to return translations.
- Supabase provides authentication and database storage for cloud dictionaries, saved words, and card review progress.
- Vercel hosts the website and provides aggregated analytics and performance measurement.
We do not sell user data, share it with data brokers, or use it for personalized advertising, retargeting, credit-worthiness evaluation, or lending purposes.
Storage and Security
Extension settings and the signed-in Supabase session are stored with
chrome.storage.local. Cloud dictionaries and account data are stored in
Supabase and protected by user-level access rules. Network requests are sent over HTTPS.
The extension does not execute remotely hosted JavaScript or Wasm code. Executable extension code is included in the extension package. External requests are API requests used for translation, authentication, and dictionary sync.
Your Choices and Deletion
- You can use the subtitle translation features without creating an account.
- You can sign out from the website or extension popup.
- You can delete saved words and custom dictionaries from the website.
- You can remove local extension data by uninstalling the extension or clearing its browser data.
- You can request deletion of account-related data by contacting the developer.
Limited Use Disclosure
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
